Why I Continue to Advocate for Men’s Rights Even If It Means Being Criticized by Anti-Feminists

My writing style has always been to examine issues critically from multiple perspectives—including masculinism, feminism, and anti-feminism. In this article, however, I want to explain why I advocate for men’s rights while refusing to align myself uncritically with anti-feminist movements.

The first reason is simple: I have never intended to promote misogyny or misandry. My goal is to clarify what is actually happening in Japanese society. I do not wish to reinforce stereotypes by claiming “women are like this.” Instead, I rely on data to identify measurable realities—for example, the proportion of people whose relationships are primarily motivated by financial interests or who display sexually avoidant attitudes.

These issues become particularly visible in marriage and dating, and they cannot simply be ignored. I recognize that relationships in many countries may be more egalitarian, and I have no intention of denying that. However, unless we confront the specific problems that exist in Japan, idealistic slogans alone will not solve anything. My own view is that healthy sexual relationships should prioritize emotional intimacy rather than treating pleasure as the sole objective. That position is far removed from hostility toward women.

My second reason is that, having lived in countries such as the United Kingdom, I have personally seen how dangerous misogyny can become. Because of that experience, I cannot agree with the idea that men should automatically unite with every movement that claims to defend men’s interests, regardless of what anti-feminists argue. In my view, the manosphere and figures such as Andrew Tate represent an ideology that is fundamentally different from genuine advocacy for men’s rights.

For example, UN Women stated in 2025 that the manosphere has been spreading rapidly among boys and young men, portraying women as manipulative and dangerous. According to the organization, this contributes to backlash against gender equality and increases the risk that online hatred will translate into real-world gender-based violence.

Similarly, the Movember Foundation has warned that nearly two-thirds of young men regularly consume online masculinity-related influencers, raising concerns that some of this content may normalize violence against women and girls.

Furthermore, a 2026 survey by the UK’s NASUWT teachers’ union, involving more than 5,000 respondents, found that approximately 23.4 percent of female teachers had experienced misogynistic comments or behavior from students during the previous year. The trend has reportedly increased for four consecutive years.

For these reasons, I believe people should recognize that cooperating with movements that promote misogyny risks contributing to an environment that encourages abuse and violence.

My third reason is that I believe any movement must have a clear objective. My goal is to help create a society where men can raise children without fear, build equal relationships, improve mental health, and promote healthy, constructive forms of masculinity. In particular, I support expanding shared parenting arrangements because I believe children benefit from maintaining meaningful relationships with both parents whenever it is safe and appropriate. Protecting children’s opportunity to spend time with both parents is, in my view, a fundamental right.

Another goal is to free people from coercion and unhealthy pressures surrounding marriage and romantic relationships. There is an important difference between relationships based on genuine affection and mutual intimacy and those entered primarily for practical or financial gain.

The article I previously wrote about the 4B movement was intended not only for women but also for men. From my perspective, many men should consider broadening their horizons—including the possibility of dating internationally—because, in the current Japanese context, finding the kind of relationship they seek may otherwise be extremely difficult.

In some situations, remaining single can ultimately be healthier than participating in a culture centered on financial dependence, excessive gift-giving, or relationships lacking genuine emotional intimacy.
